Sree Gananatha Introduction

This is the introduction that I am going to say on Wednesday for our Eid/Deepavali celebration at FSI. I am going to dress up in a sari and sing near the beginning of the party. Although I am pretty scared to sing by myself since my voice is much better in a group, I am excited for the party!

Below is a rough translation of the above Telugu (which is why it sounds a bit elementary…):

Now we are going to sing a beautiful song written by Purandaradaasa, a Kannada composer. The beat is a rupakam beat, and the melody is malahari. The song is a devotional song for Ganesha. It is about his character, his knowledge, and his prayers. For Hindus, Ganesha is believed to remove all obstacles. At the start of anything good, Hindus pray to Ganesha to help them. Telugus sing this song as a devotional song, and it most often sung in a group. The song is sung from the stomach, and not the lungs as some Western music like opera, is sung.

To practice I sang this song many times outside with my teacher, but I still don’t think I sing it well. For me, the song is rather difficult because it has a different melody and way of singing than I am used to, however I really do enjoy the song and classical, Carnatic music quite a bit.
