పోయిన వారము మేము ఒక అర్మినియన్ చర్చి ఉత్సవం కి వెళ్ళాము. ఇప్పుడు క్రైస్తవ మనుషులు లేనట్ లో పాల్గోతున్నారు, కాబట్టి ఈ చర్చి ఒక లేనట్ ఉత్సవం ఏర్పాటు చేసింది. మొత్తం భోజనం శాకాహారి భోజనానం ఎందుకంటే లేనట్ కాలం లో వాళ్ళు మాంసము తినరు. మేము అక్కడ కి పనేండు న్నార గంటల కి చేరుకున్నాము – మధ్యానం భోజనం కాలం ఉండింది, కాబట్టి చర్చి చొట్టు పక్కన నేను మంచి భోజనని వాసనవచ్చింది! మొత్తం భోజనం వాసనచుసిన తరవాత, ఎన్నుకో చాలా కష్టం. నేను వంకాయ, అన్నం, చీస్ పస్త్రి, దోల్మాస్, ఇంక బ్రెడ్ తిన్నాను ఇంక మా కుటుంబములు కోసం కవిత ఇంక నేను ఒక రెండవ సరి ఇంకొక ప్లేటు కొన్నాము! ఆ వచ్చే వీకెండ్ నేను అర్మినియన్ భోజనం ఇంక రెండు సారులు తిన్నాను ఇంక మా అమ్మ-గారుకు కుడా ఇది చాలా నచ్చింది. తిని మేము మా బల్ల దగ్గర కుర్చున మనుషులు తో మాట్లాడాము. కొందరు ఈ ఉత్సవం నిర్వహించారు, కాబట్టి రుచిగా ఉన్న భోజనం కోసం మేము ‘ధన్యవాదము’ చెప్పాము, ఇంక వాళ్ళు రాబోయే మే లో విందు గురించి మాకు చెప్పారు (అప్పుడు నా దగ్గర ఒక సెలవు, ఐతే నేను వెళ్ళలేను :(). నా ఉద్దేశం లో కవిత ఇంక నేను అర్మీనియా మనుషులు కాదు, కాబట్టి వాళ్ళుకు చాలా సంతోషంగా ఉండింది. అందరుకు అర్మినియన్ వచ్చు ఇంక ఈ విందు ఒక విదేశ ఘటన లాగా. ఒక పెద్ద మహిళా పూజారి (ప్రీస్ట్) గురించి చెప్పింది. కారు ప్రమాదం జరిగినప్పుడు ఆయన ఒక మహిళాని కలిసేరు. ఆమె తో ఆయన ప్రేమించారు. ఆయన అనుమతి కోసం తన అమ్మ-గారుని అడగి, ‘ఆమెని అర్మీనియా కు పంపించు, నేను అమ్ముకు మన భాష ఇంక సంస్కృతి నేర్పించుతాను’ అని ఆమె చెప్పింది. అర్మీనియా కు వెళ్ళటం ఈ చిన్న మహిళా నిర్ణయం చేసింది, ఇంక ప్రస్తుతం వాళ్ళుకు ఇద్దరు పిల్లలు ఇంక ఆమెకు మంచి అర్మీనియా భాష, అని కథ చెప్పిన మహిళా చెప్పింది. కొంచం మాట్లాడి, మేము పూజ గది కి వెళ్ళాము ఇంక ఆభరణముల ని చూసాము. చర్చి లో కుడా వాళ్ళు అర్మీనియా తరగుతులు నేర్పించుతారు ఇంక తరగతి గదుల ని చూసాము. వాళ్ళుకు మంచి మోసైక్స్ ఉన్నాయి ఇంక కట్టడము చాలా అందమైనది. చూసి, మేము ఉత్సవంకి తిరిగి వెళ్ళాము కాని నా బల్ల దగ్గర కొత్త మనుషులు ఉన్నేరు! మేము కొంచం తెలుగు పని ముగించ వలసి వచ్చింది. మేము చేయటం మొగలు పెట్టేము కాబట్టి వాళ్ళు మమల్ని కొన్ని ప్రశ్నలు అడిగారు ఇంక కొన్ని మాటలు జరిగాయి. మానవ హక్కులు ఈ వారము మన విషయం ఉండింది, కాబట్టి అర్మీనియా జాతి విధ్వంసం గురించి అడిగేము. ఆయన ఒక ఆర్మేనియా మనిషి ఇంక అరబ్బీ దేశముల నిపుణుడు (ప్రస్తుతం ఆయన ప్రభుత్వం కోసం నేర్పించుతారు) కాబట్టి ఆయన సంతోషం తో జవాబులు ఇచ్చారు. ఈ విషాదం లో చాలా కుటుంబాల లో కనీసం ఒక మనిషి చచ్చి పోయాడు, కాబట్టి టుర్కిష్ ప్రభుత్వం దిని గురించి మాట్లాడదు.  ఈ ఘటన వల్ల, మా మాట ‘genocide’ పుట్టింది ఇంక పది లక్షలు పదిహేను లక్షలు మధ్య మనుషులు చచ్చి పోయారు. ఒట్టోమన్ రాజ్యం మనుషులు ఈ పద్ధతులు మొదలు పెట్టేరు, కాబట్టి ఒత్తామన్ ప్రాంతం ప్రస్తుతం టర్కీ, కాబట్టి ఈ ప్రాంతం ఇప్పుడు వాళ్ల బాధ్యత, కదా? మేము ఉట్టి రెండవ యుద్ధం హోలోకాస్ట్ గురించి మాట్లాడకూడదు. ఈ ఘటనులు కూడా ఒక నిజమైన విషాదం ఉన్నాయి. కాబట్టి ఇప్పుడు చాలా దేశములు లో ఒక బలమైన అర్మీనియా వలసపోయిన జాతిని గురించి అధ్యయనం (డయాస్పోరా) ఉంది, ఐతే అర్మీనియా భాశ ఇంక సంస్కృతి చచ్చి పోలేదు. దిని వల్ల మేము ఈ భోజనం తినగలము, అర్మీనియా భాశ వినగలము, ఇంక వాళ్ల చర్చిని సందర్శించగలము! చాలా తినటం ఇంక నేర్చుకోవటం కలిసి ఉండటం ప్రత్యెక, కాని ఈ రోజు మేము రెండు చేయగలిగేము!

The Friday before last my teacher and I went to an Armenian church-sponsored food festival. You may be thinking, what does Armenian food have to do with Telugu and South Asia studies? First of all let me just say that all language learning is best done on a full stomach (at least that’s my story, and I’m sticking to it). Secondly, and more substantially, as you can see from my previous post, our weekly topic was human rights, so we thought we might get someone to talk to us about the Armenian genocide at the festival. Possibly kind of a hare-brained scheme (I don’t often go to Shabbat dinners and ask about the Holocaust), but we tried it. Let me first say that the food was as expected – delicious! (everything was vegetarian because it was a Friday during Lent). I had eggplant and grape leaves, cheese-stuffed puff pastry, and hummus and pita. It was so good I took home another 15 dollar plate to munch on with my mom all weekend. Feeling satisfied and after touring the church itself and chatting in Telugu (there is no better way to get looks of mixed confusion and amusement from older Armenian ladies than to go to one of their church socials with your South Asian language teacher and speak an Indian language…), we started talking to some of the people at the table. One of the couples happened to be composed of not one but two teachers (I can’t escape it no matter where I go), and they were happy, or at least, interested in telling us more about Armenia including some of the human rights abuses involved in the genocide. I still can’t believe we found possibly the only people who could give us a run-down of the last 100 years of Armenian history – all detailed in Telugu above. After speaking to them a bit and recording a video in Telugu about the head scarf issue (see below!) we went home with about 10 pounds of food between us.
